Lower maintenance costs.

Compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, vehicles with an electric drive benefit from lower maintenance costs. They have no wearing parts, like air filters or spark plugs. There is no need to change the oil. Electric drive units generally require less maintenance over their service life.

Used Electric Cars

The everyday benefits of electric cars.

With a BMW electric vehicle, mobility is becoming easier and easier, especially in towns and cities. Bus lanes are often approved for private electric vehicles. Parking charges are usually reduced or even waived.

Used Electric Cars

Future-oriented driving.

You will experience immediate acceleration as electric drives respond much faster than combustion engines and do not have a manual transmission. This acceleration is usually greater in BMW electric vehicles than in our similarly priced vehicles with conventional drive systems, due to their more powerful engine specification.

Charging made easy with BMW Charging.

Whether you're travelling or just running errands, with hundreds of charging points and growing, you'll always find the right charging option for you.

Used Electric Cars

Relaxed charging at home.

A real benefit of electric vehicles is that they can be charged at home at any time. A home charging station lets you conveniently charge your BMW overnight. A permanently installed BMW Wallbox Plus, for example, charges electric vehicles with up to 22 kW of power.

Batteries with an impressive service life.

Electric vehicle batteries have been developed with the greatest care. Their service life can be positively impacted by adapting your personal driving behaviour. Among other things, by maintaining the recommended 10-80% state of charge. Intelligent heat management adjusts the battery to the optimum operating temperature and prevents overheating.

The environmental impact of electric cars.

Used Electric Cars

Improved carbon footprint.

Depending on the power mix used to charge them and their total mileage (km), electric vehicles can have a better carbon footprint over their entire life cycle compared to combustion engine vehicles. This is especially the case when they are charged with electricity from renewable energy sources during their use phase. One example of this is charging a vehicle from a photovoltaic system via a BMW Wallbox.

Used Electric Cars

Extensive recycling.

We are developing batteries that can be separated into their individual materials. Even today, BMW battery cells are recycled by external recycling partners using state-of-the-art industrialised processes. Recovery rates depend on the material and process, although future improvements are expected to increase these rates. In a current development project, we are working on recovering materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt from BMW battery cells, and using this material to produce new cell materials.

Used Electric Cars

Less noise, no exhaust fumes.

Electric vehicles are driven with no exhaust fumes and virtually no engine noise. As electric vehicles are locally emission-free, they have less of an impact on people and nature in their immediate vicinity.

Used Electric Cars

The benefits of regenerative braking with electric cars.

Regenerative braking is also known as recuperation or energy recovery. In this process, kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy when the vehicle brakes. The range of an electric vehicle is dependent on driving behaviour and the route profile. A further benefit is less pollution caused by brake particle abrasion.

Improved efficiency.

Used Electric Cars

A vehicle's efficiency indicates the proportion of supplied energy that is actually used for the forward propulsion of the vehicle. If the prescribed EU driving cycle (WLTP) and losses incurred during battery charging and discharging are taken into account, the efficiency of the current BMW generation of electric drive systems is around 75%.

Used Electric Cars

About 75% of the energy charged is actually used for the propulsion of the vehicle when driving a BMW electric vehicle. With internal combustion engine vehicles, efficiency under comparable conditions is around 33%. The efficiency losses with internal combustion engines are the result of waste heat.

Questions and answers about the benefits of electric vehicles.

What are the benefits of electric vehicles?

An electric vehicle offers a wide range of benefits, from cost planning to everyday use and environmental impact. Maintenance costs are also lower in relation to comparable vehicles with conventional drive systems. In addition, electric vehicles are exempt from vehicle tax. In daily life, you benefit from almost silent driving and the sensation of immediate acceleration. In terms of environmental impact, electric vehicles do not emit local emissions when driving. If electricity from renewable energy sources is used to charge the vehicle, this further reduces its carbon footprint during its use phase. The range of an electric vehicle with a full battery is close to that of a comparable internal combustion engine vehicle with a full tank.

What are emission-free vehicles?

This term refers to all vehicles that do not cause local emissions when driven, unlike internal combustion engine vehicles. In the first phases of material procurement and production, electric vehicles initially have a higher carbon footprint than a comparable combustion engine vehicle. This is mainly due to the energy-intensive processes involved in the production of the electric vehicle battery. However, this changes when the vehicle is driven, as electric vehicles do not generate local emissions and their indirect emissions are dependent on the electricity mix. The more green electricity is used to charge the battery, the better the carbon footprint of the electric vehicle compared to a comparable internal combustion engine vehicle. During the use phase, a photovoltaic system can reduce the vehicle's carbon footprint if the electricity generated is used to charge the electric vehicle.
